Awareness, in the immediacy of the flow of thoughts, emotions and sensations, is the source of profound insight, perfect clarity, complete mental and emotional stability, compassion and skillfulness in all situations. The innate ability to be at ease, wise, balanced and compassionate, is discovered in awareness.

Just rest the mind and body naturally, without pushing away thoughts, without seeking anything. This is all that is required, whether activity is strenuous, relaxed or in-between. What remains is clarity and alertness that is open like a clear sky. This is what awareness is! When the next thought comes, it appears due to the clarity and alertness of awareness.

It makes no difference what points of view arise. In awareness, they vanish naturally, leaving no trace, like a line drawn in the sky. Awareness, relaxed and enormously potent, is the source of mental and emotional stability, insight and skillful qualities and activities. By the power of instinctive recognition of awareness, these become increasingly evident.

Awareness is the basis of all perceptions. Without awareness, there wouldn’t be knowledge of anything. It has no center or boundary. It has no beginning and is open and spacious like the sky. The openness of awareness is not made out of anything and is alert and clear.

In clarity, there is profound intelligence and we are introduced to it right on the spot wherever we are. It’s this simple: If we do not rely on clarity, we never find this special intelligence. However, by the power of clarity, we find that this unique intelligence includes complete mental and emotional stability, insight, compassion, natural ethics and beneficial skillfulness in all circumstances.

Practically, this is how it works: When disturbing states arise, rely on a short moment of unending clarity. Over time, by the power of the short moment growing longer, there is instinctive clarity regardless of what type of thought, emotion, sensation or experience arises. Much to our surprise, we find that all of these disturbing states rest in clarity!

For many of us, it is most challenging to rely on clarity when there are disturbing thoughts, emotions, sensations, or other experiences. It is important to see that even very disturbing states arise within ever-present clarity. Please acknowledge that the basis of all points of view is clarity.

We see that just as we are empowered by clarity, this very same potential for empowerment lies within everyone. At some point, based on our own experience, we come to the conclusion that by everyone empowering themselves with short moments of clarity, we, the people of the world, unify as the force that brings about world peace.

The openness of space can be likened to our very own clarity. We become certain of clarity’s power to be unaffected by points of view and to provide a very special kind of intelligence that shows us what to do and how to act in all situations. This means we have greater clarity and the know-how to use that clarity to be of benefit. Initially, we know how to use clarity to benefit ourselves. We empower ourselves with short moments. As we do so, unending clarity becomes obvious. Clarity is the instruction, demonstration and result.

The power of clarity shows us that thoughts, emotions, sensations and experiences are simply points of view within its balanced view. This can be illustrated by the way planets and stars appear within the expanse of space. Similarly, points of view—thoughts, emotions, sensations and experiences—appear within clarity. And just like space is unaffected by any event within it, clarity is unaffected by its points of view—thoughts, emotions, sensations and experiences.

Short moments repeated again and again do become automatic, as was stated when we first heard this simple instruction. Unending clarity becomes increasingly obvious until it is evident at all times. By putting this into practice, we attain deep confidence in the power of short moments to bring benefit to our lives. We keep it simple: Short moments, many times.

What begins to happen is that the initial short moments grow longer. Along the way it dawns on us that these moments of clarity are actually revealing permanent, unending clarity. We discover that clarity is available all the time. This dawning is similar to the way the sunrise illuminates the entire landscape and sky. Once the sun rises everything is seen clearly.

By the power of short moments, we begin to discover more and more a sense of clarity that fills us with soothing, powerful energy. By carrying on with short moments, whenever we remember to do so, the moments naturally begin to last longer. As the moments of clarity grow longer, we find that our mind and body are functioning more easily. We begin to notice a soothing quality in our daily life and increasing beneficial energy.

An excellent illustration for clarity existing within all of our thoughts, emotions, sensations and other experiences is one of butter existing in cream. When cream is churned, the butter becomes obvious. So too, short moments are related to unending clarity in the same way that churning cream is related to the result of butter. Just as churning cream cannot fail to produce butter, short moments of clarity always highlight the unending clarity that is evident in the here-and-now.

“Well, yes,” you might say, “but isn’t clarity really separate from thoughts, emotions, sensations and other experiences?” Only from the point of view of incomplete knowledge is there an apparent separateness; from the vantage of clarity, there is no separateness at all.

The simple approach of short moments provides unending clarity. And when throughout global human culture, we gather together in the commitment to short moments of clarity, we, the people of planet earth, create a world that is based on the innate leadership and problem-solving capacity of clarity rather than on confusion. It is as simple and powerful as that.

Short moments of awareness are acknowledged as unending clarity. At first, we may remember to rely on clarity only once in a while. This is perfectly okay and is the way it is for most everyone. Initially, we remember a short moment of clarity and then we forget. This is normal. However, we must not give up—ever!

The peaceful clarity and alertness that is identified when we stop thinking is the basis of all thoughts. It saturates all thoughts without exception. This is truly amazing! This is similar to the vastness of space being present regardless of what appears within it.
